Jammu and Kashmir Road Tax

Jammu and Kashmir RTO tax is based on the Jammu and Kashmir Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1957. It states that everyone driving a vehicle in Jammu and Kashmir should pay road tax unless specifically exempt.

Jammu and Kashmir Road Tax Calculation

In Jammu and Kashmir, the regional transport office (RTO) assesses and collects road tax payments from vehicle owners. Before 2019, the vehicle road tax in Jammu and Kashmir was collected based on the cost of the vehicle, type, power (horsepower), and usage.

The Jammu and Kashmir road tax was amended in 2019 and is calculated at a flat rate of 9% or 10% of the cost of the vehicle. The tax can be paid online or offline. You can also pay the tax as a one-time payment (life tax) or in installments.

Road Tax in Jammu and Kashmir for Four-Wheelers  

On the other hand, while buying a four-wheeler, the ex-showroom cost of the vehicle is taken into consideration while calculating road tax. To that end, if you intend to buy a car in J&K, use the information below to understand your tax liability.

The vehicle tax on four-wheelers that were registered before 3 August 2019 would be taxed according to their HP, seating capacity, and functionality as follows:

Four-wheeler vehicles registered from 4 August 2019 onwards will be charged road tax at 10% of their ex-showroom price. This tax can be paid annually, half-yearly, quarterly, or as a lump sum (life tax).

Road Tax for Commercial Vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir

When it comes to commercial vehicles, taxes are levied based on seating capacity and the unladen weight of the vehicle. Here are more details of the same:

Road Tax for Other State Vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir

From August 2019 onwards, new rules were implemented for taxes applicable to out-of-state vehicles. According to the amended Motor Vehicles Act, any vehicle that enters Jammu and Kashmir after 3 August 2019 is applicable for road tax as follows:

  • All vehicles except motorcycles exceeding Rs. 1.5 lakhs: 9% of the ex-showroom price of the vehicle paid on a pro-rata basis.

  • Motorcycles exceeding Rs. 1.5 lakhs: 10% of the ex-showroom price of the vehicle paid on a pro-rata basis.

You can pay Jammu and Kashmir road tax for out-of-state vehicles offline and online.

How to Pay Jammu and Kashmir Road Tax Online?

The online road tax payment in Jammu and Kashmir is a quick and convenient payment option and is open to all vehicle owners alike.

If you opt for Jammu and Kashmir Road tax online payment, you need to proceed as follows:

  • Log into the Parivahan website and fill in the requested details.

  • Choose “Online Service.”

  • Select “Services Vehicles.”

  • Enter the registration number of your vehicle.

  • Select online service.

  • Tap on “Pay your Taxes.”

  • Type in your mobile number to generate a one-time password (OTP).

  • Select a payment method, enter your card details and make the payment.

  • If your payment is successful, you will get a receipt for your online road tax in J&K. Save the soft copy of your road tax receipt carefully and retain a hard copy to keep in your vehicle.

Offline Vehicle Tax Payment

If you prefer to pay your road tax offline in J&K, you can easily do so; it is a common mode of payment.

You need to visit your nearest RTO and provide all the relevant information. Keep all related documents ready, including your ID proof and proof of address.  

You can make an electronic payment using a debit card, credit card, or Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Alternatively, you can pay in cash.

Once your payment is complete, ensure to keep the road tax receipt in your vehicle, but not before taking a photocopy and reserving it in another place for safekeeping.

Penalty for Non-Payment of Jammu and Kashmir Road Tax

If you don't pay the J&K road tax applicable for a particular vehicle attracts a fine of up to Rs. 100. If the vehicle owner fails to pay this fine, their vehicle can be seized by the RTO authorities.
