Road Tax in Odisha: Complete Guide on Calculation, Rates & Online Payment

Team AckoApr 30, 2024

Odisha is among the fastest-growing states in India. To drive Odisha’s infrastructural and economic development, the government collects road tax from motor vehicle owners. The government uses the money received from the Odisha RTO road tax to build rural and urban roads, flyovers, railway overbridges, ports, and the like. Hence, Odisha Parivahan road tax payment is mandatory for all motor vehicles operating within the state's geographical boundaries.

The Motor Vehicles Act 1988, the Odisha Motor Vehicles Taxation Act 1975, and the Odisha Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Act 2017 contain rules related to road tax in Odisha for two-wheelers, cars, commercial vehicles, and other state vehicles. The following sections discuss the various provisions of Odisha Parivahan road tax and elaborate on how to pay road tax online in Odisha, the RTO charges, and the best way to determine your tax liabilities with the Odisha road tax calculator.

Odisha Road Tax Calculation

The Odisha road tax calculation process differs from other Indian states. The state government levies an additional tax on goods carriage and public service vehicles under Section 3A and a ‘Green Tax’ under Section 4D of the Odisha Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1975.

The RTO road tax in Odisha has two components - Central and State. The road tax rate in Odisha is calculated based on a vehicle’s make, model, unladen weight, and usage patterns.

The tax rate is always higher for commercial and luxury vehicles. In fact, luxury vehicles in Odisha also need to pay a one-time tax at the time of purchasing the vehicle. The actual Odisha Parivahan road tax payment amount a private or commercial owner has to pay depends on the following factors:

  • The vehicle type

  • The purpose of use

  • The vehicle’s make and model

  • The vehicle’s seating capacity

  • The vehicle’s engine capacity

  • The vehicle’s ex-showroom price
