Every vehicle owner entering the territory of Pondicherry is liable to pay road tax to the government. The State Government uses the road tax collected to construct and maintain the road network.
You can pay the Pondicherry road tax by visiting the local RTO or the Parivahan website. The Pondicherry Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1967, governs the regulations regarding the calculation, collection and execution of road tax in Pondicherry. It states the procedure to be followed for the imposition and the manner of payment of road tax. In case a person defaults, a penalty is charged by the licensing officer.
The Pondicherry Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1967, lays down the rules for calculating the road tax. These are calculated depending on the cost of the vehicle, seating capacity, engine capacity, model and manufacturer. Therefore, different road tax rates are applicable for different types of vehicles. Being a Union Territory, the Pondicherry road tax is different and lower than other states.

As mentioned earlier, the Pondicherry road tax can be paid in-person through the nearest RTO or via the official website of the Transport Department. The introduction of the Parivahan portal has made online payment of commercial road tax very easy for everyone. It offers various online services such as calculating and paying road tax, checking the payment status and verifying the payment.
You can choose any option, depending on your convenience. It is important to submit all the required documents and the tax amount in both cases. Keep the acknowledgement receipt with you for future reference.
If you prefer Pondicherry road tax online payment, here are the steps to be followed:
Step 1: Go to the official Vahan Parivahan website.
Step 2: Select your state, RTO and then click on the 'Proceed' button.
Step 3: Select the 'RC Related Services' option from the main menu. Next, select the 'Pay your Tax' option from the dropdown menu.
Step 4: Now, fill in your vehicle's registration number to pay your RTO road tax in Pondicherry online.
Step 5: Choose from the available online payment methods like a debit card or net banking and pay your road tax.
The penalties for defaulting on road tax are calculated based on the delay period and the actual frequency of tax payments. In Pondicherry, the penalty amount cannot exceed the yearly tax.
