The RTO Assam is responsible for varied activities related to vehicles, including vehicle registration, issuing driving licenses, collection of road taxes and fees, and implementing rules and regulations according to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

The State Transport Commissioner heads the Assam Regional Transport Office and operates under the purview of the Transport Department of the Government of Assam. Moreover, the state has around 34 RTOs, each serving a particular region and responsible for the issuance of registration certificates (RC), driving licenses, and more.

Now, you have the option to pay road tax online and offline. So, let's discuss the steps to pay tax online: -
Go to the official website of Assam RTO: https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/
Now choose the ‘Online Service’ option.
After this, select 'Vehicle-related Services' and then choose 'Assam' from the list.
Write the VIN or Vehicle Identification Number.
Pick an online service.
Select ‘Pay Road Taxes’.
Enter the registered mobile number to get an OTP.
Choose a payment method, click on continue, and pay the amount.
Lastly, download the payment receipt for future reference.
Paying road tax offline is the preferred mode of payment among people. For this, you have to visit your District RTO office. Once you reach the office, finish all the documentation work, pay the fee, and keep the payment proof for future use.
If you are buying a new vehicle in Assam, it is very essential to get it registered with the District RTO within 7 days of its delivery date which excludes the time taken for transportation. However, government-approved dealers can also carry out the process of registration on behalf of the owner.
In cases where only a chassis is delivered by the car manufacturer and the body is attached or constructed later on, a temporary registration can be issued. This is allowed under Section 43 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, and is valid for one month until the body is completed. The registration certificate can also be extended if necessary.

Follow the below steps to apply for a driver's license: -
Visit the official website of Assam RTO.
Select ‘ online’.
Now select ‘Assam’ as your state name.
Click the button ' Apply Online' and after that 'New Driving License' and lastly click on 'Continue.'
After that, write your LL number along with your DOB.
Now, you have to fill out the form.
Upload all the essential documents.
Pay the fees.
You will receive a unique application number.
Now, visit your district RTO with all the original documents.
Once all your papers are verified, you are asked to schedule your driving license exam.
Attend the exam.
3 passport-sized photos (recent).
Need to show ID like PAN card, Passport, etc.
Address proof like Passport, ration card, registered rent agreement, etc.
Age proof
Medical certificate that proves you are physically fit.
