There are numerous factors based on which states impose road tax on their residents. They are:

But if you talk about West Bengal RTO, they calculate road tax based on two parameters. They are:
Type of vehicle you own
The main use of the vehicle
Engines up to 80cc rating: Rs 1,560
In between 80cc and 170cc rating: Rs 3,125
Engines between 170cc and 250cc rating: Rs 4,685
For engines over 250cc rating: Rs 6,250

Ensure you have your vehicle's registration number ready before starting the tax payment process.
Locate and click on the "Pay Taxes" button on the next page.
Now, enter your mobile number when prompted and wait for the password (OTP).
Input the received OTP in the designated field and click "Show Details."
Review all the displayed details. Update insurance information if necessary.
Input the information to get your tax details.
Choose the preferred tax mode, and the system automatically calculates your tax.
Click on the "Payment" tab to move forward with the tax payment process.
Select your payment method from the options.
Complete the payment process to pay your road tax online successfully.
In case you are unable to pay road tax on time, you need to pay some penalty with each passing day.
Up to 15 days after the lapse of the grace period: Not applicable
16 to 45 days: 1/20th part of the tax applicable
45 to 74 days: 1/10th part of the tax applicable
75 days to 1 year: 1/5th part of the tax applicable
1 to 2 years: 2/5th part of the tax applicable
2 to 3 years: 3/5th part of the tax applicable
3 to 4 years: 4/5th part of the tax applicable
Over 4 years: Full tax
Here is the process to apply for vehicle RC is as follows: -
Go to the nearest district RTO.
Ensure you have all the required documents to fill out the form.
Complete Form 20, which is the application for registration of vehicle.
Hand in the filled form and essential documents to the RTO staff.
The RTO will check your vehicle to ensure it's safe and meets emission standards.
At the RTO counter, pay the road tax, registration fees, and any other applicable charges. The amount varies based on the type of vehicle and age.
RTO staff will review your documents as well as the inspection report.
Once everything checks out, the RTO will issue your Vehicle Registration Certificate. This document proves your vehicle is legally registered.
