The passport price in India varies based on the type of service selected:

  • Normal Passport: A Normal Passport is typically issued within 30 days, provided all documents are in order and the police verification is completed. This process follows the standard timeline and fees, which are known as the normal passport time and fees.

  • Tatkaal Passport: Expedited service that delivers the passport in under a week. It incurs an additional fee of ₹2000 over the normal charges. This additional cost is part of the emergency passport fees applicable when you need a passport on a faster timeline than the standard processing period.

How to pay Passport Fees in India?

Passport fees in India can be paid both through online and offline processes. The steps for each are explained below:

Online Payment Process

  • Visit the official Passport Seva website at passportindia.gov.in.

  • Sign up and log in.

  • You can choose the service you need, like a new passport, a reissue, or an extension.

  • Pick a way of payment and follow the steps given.

  • You should get a confirmation message after making the payment.

  • Make an appointment at a PSK or RPO and bring your papers with you.

Offline Payment Process

1. SBI Bank Challan

  • Generate an SBI Challan while filling out the online application form.

  • Visit your nearest SBI branch to make the payment.

  • Payments can be made within 3 hours of challan generation and up to 85 days thereafter.

  • Processing time is approximately 2 working days.

2. Walk-in to Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)

  • You can pay passport fees in cash if you walk into a PSK without a prior appointment.

  • Scheduling an online appointment is advisable to avoid long waiting times.

3.  Additional Information

  • Tatkaal Scheme: For applicants under the Tatkaal scheme, pay the normal category fees online. The additional Tatkaal fee (Rs. 2000) is payable in cash at the passport office once the application is accepted. Ensure to carry the required cash amount when visiting the office.

You can pay online passport application fees via the following channels: 

  • Credit card and debit card - All Visa and Master cards are accepted to pay passport fees online. Keep in mind that for all card transactions, banks charge an additional 1.5% plus a service charge. 

  • SBI Bank Challan - While filling out the passport application form, you can opt for the SBI Challan for payment. Once the challan is generated, you can physically visit your nearest SBI branch to make the payment. 

  • Internet Banking - Passport fees in India can be paid via internet banking through the State Bank of India (SBI) and other approved banks. 

You can also visit a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) without a prior appointment. All Walk-in applicants can pay passport application fees in cash.

Step 1: Opt for the Surrender certificate option in the application type. 

Step 2: Choose from a foreign nationality acquired before 1 June 2010 or a foreign nationality acquired on or after 1 June 2010. 

The fee calculator can also be used to check fees for the Police clearance certificate (PCC) and Background verification for GEP. The standard fee charged for both of these documents is Rs. 500.
